Mal Brown lists Hawthorn East townhouse
Postscript: this home sold at auction for $1.465 million.
Former Victorian Football League player Mal Brown is selling his Hawthorn East townhouse and moving to the Mornington Peninsula.
The Melbourne property at 4/2 Myrniong Grove is expected to trade for between $1.3- $1.4 million.
The listing comes nearly two months since Mr Brown’s wife, Kay, died after a three year battle with ovarian cancer.
The pair’s son, Campbell, is a former Hawthorn and Gold Coast Suns player (in the competition now known as Australian Football League). The couple also have a daughter.
Described by Ken Piesse in book Football Legends of the Bush as “one of the most colourful and controversial characters of the game,” Mr Brown turns 73 this year.
The sportsman moved to Melbourne from Perth in 1974 to play with the Richmond Football Club – but did not represent the team in that year’s Grand Final because he was suspended for throwing the ball at an umpire.

“He has a house in Portsea where he’s mostly been living and he doesn’t spend much time in Melbourne anymore,” Mr Barrett told news.com.au in this item. “His daughter is in Carnegie and Campbell’s also in town, so [Mal] is mostly just coming up to visit them”.
In 2015, Mr and Mrs Brown sold a larger family home in the vicinity – an Edwardian at 59 Leura Grove, Hawthorn East, – for $2.6 million.
