La Verna sells for $12m – a Kew record

A Kew home has sold for $12 million – a suburb record price.

An IT industry executive is understood to have snapped up La Verna, on Sackville Street, off-market.

The 120 year old mansion has previously been used as a monastery, grief counselling centre and school retreat.

In 2002, developer Phillip Watts offered then owner the Catholic Church, $8.3m for the then 1.2-hectare estate which extended to Rowland St.

That builder, who couldn’t contacted, then subdivided the estate into seven blocks, many which have since been replaced with modern homes around tennis courts.

The La Verna property, then on 3316 sqm, was converted into a home and quietly listed last year, sources say.
