Woolworths given green light for $150m mixed-use project
Woolworths has won permission to replace a prominent south east Melbourne office with a supermarket and five storeys of apartments (artist’s impression, top).
The end value of the Glen Iris project, proposed with Time & Place, circles $150 million.
The pair outlaid $29.5m for the 1.1 acre site – 173 Burke Road – in June, 2020, a volatile time with the country entering its first COVID lockdown; Daniel Wolman now of Cushman & Wakefield was the agent.
The permitted plan, with 60 dwellings, replaces another, containing 90 residences, proposed later that year, rejected by the Glen Eira council (twice) then the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal – the latter in May, 2022.
This pocket of Glen Iris is c12 kilometres from the CBD.
Next chapter for major Glen Iris site
Prior to accommodating the office, 173 Burke Rd, Glen Iris, was a Ken Foster Ford dealership.
The Woolworths/Time & Place project is penned by Cera Stribley (story continues below).
The supermarket tenancy, expected to spread nearly 4000 sqm, will have a six-bay Direct to Boot facility.
“Our partnership with Cera Stribley is one that we are particularly proud of,” Time & Place founder and director, Tim Price, said.
“[Glen Iris] marks our second collaboration following our very successful Victoria Hill…project in neighbouring Camberwell,” he added.
The Burke Rd proposal was one of several approved by planning minister Sonya Kilkenny this week.
In another, Lendlease was permitted to build three more apartment buildings, seeing out its Collins Wharf project in Docklands.
